Though not really surprising, it’s disgusting all the same:
Mormon Leader Compares Gay Rights Movement to Rise of Hitler
Sheri Dew, president of the LDS-owned Deseret Book, likened
those who do not oppose gay marriage to those who did nothing to oppose Hitler’s rise to power. Ms. Dew, who is unmarried and has never raised children, also showed a picture of a same-sex couple with infants and said, in disgust, “I just can’t stomach this—the thought of those girls being raised in that kind of a setting.”
One of the grooms Dew was decrying turned out to be Eric Ethington, a former fellow Mormon who served an LDS mission in Korea. Explaining why he and his partner Doug Okun decided to marry, Ethington said, “It wasn’t about the politics, or the civil disobedience, or the social activism… It was about our love for each other and our love for our family.

pissing in our holy water
nick over at zionide posted samples of a few of the (what he called) “needlessly controversial” gay mormon missionary pictures that are on display in SLC. i found his quick dismissal of the controversy disappointing. in fact, i think it’s…

These kinds of comments are just sad. Why is it that so many gay people feel that the only necessary and appropriate response to anti-homosexual activities is to call everyone ignorant? I mean, there’s a good chance they are (but then again, there’s a good chance I’m ignorant about a lot of things too, that doesn’t stop me from trying to express how I feel about them, though), but at this point “ignorant” is just becoming a tired cliche’. You don’t convince anyone of anything when you do that. You sound like an elitist, and you alienate a public that, whether you like it or not, you’ll need to get what you want.

Eric Ethington was my roomate one summer at Ricks College. He’s not only a very smart person (I think he’s read every book ever published!) he is a wonderful human being also.
After over 20 years, I contacted him and we had a wonderful conversation in which we discussed why we both left the LDS Church and how our lives are now. During the discussion Eric paused several times to take care of the needs of his two daughters like any caring father, gay or straight, would.
I only wish that Sherri Dew could spend some time with Eric and Doug. She would see two human beings in a loving family situation. Maybe then she would see how misguided she and the leadership of the LDS Church are for rejecting gays and lesbians.
Although I’m “straight” (hate that term!) I support gay marriage 100%. I just hope that I live to see the day when gays and lesbians gain FULL civil rights under the law.
