Though it’s no surprise and I think everyone expected this, I’m still annoyed and angry about the LDS church’s statement regarding Utah’s Amendment 3.
Since this is Utah, the church’s announcement pretty much guarantees that the state’s “marriage protection” amendment will pass, despite criticism from Utah’s top lawyers, lawmakers, and newspapers - even the conservative ones - about the legality of part two of the amendment, which states that “no other domestic union, however denominated, may be recognized as a marriage or given the same or substantially equivalent legal effect.”
Sounds way too much like Virginia to me.
Both sides have been buying TV time like crazy, and while I don’t think Don’t Amend’s ads are as compelling as they could be (though I love the people in them), it’s nice to see the views on-air here anyway, and given the audience the ads might be more effective than I think. I’m not exactly in-touch with their target demographic after all.
What it comes down to is this: If you’re registered to vote in Utah (or Ohio or any other state with an amendment on the ballot), DO - and vote no on 3.

Silly Utah, trying to out-discriminate the Old Dominion. Not to be outdone by an upstart western state, a Virginia legislator has prefiled a bill for the upcoming session that would put a constitutional amendment on our 2005 ballot that would ban gay marriage.
I’m getting really tired of this shit.
